At Cut Price, our team wants to help you make the most of your move. Do-it-yourself moving is both fun and economical. Make sure you have some good friends or willing family to help you and your move is an experience in itself.
Our team have been helping people like you move everyday for a number of years. Below we have listed some ideas and safety points to think about to help you drive your moving van safely and some packing pointers to help you in the planning, loading and unloading of your precious furniture and goods.

Your Cut Price Moving Van:

• ALWAYS fasten your seat belts. Remember that the number of occupants allowed to ride in the cab is limited by the number of seat belts installed
  
• NEVER carry any passengers in the cargo/load area. This is illegal and can lead to serious or fatal injury.
  
• FAMILIARIZE yourself with your van, its features and size before you drive. Stay within speed limits and drive with caution in hazardous conditions. 
  
• ALWAYS anticipate stops and brake early, this can save you and your load.
  
• NEVER transport hazardous materials.
  
• ALWAYS get help to observe "blind spots" to the left and rear of the van, especially when backing. NEVER just rely on mirrors to ensure an area is clear of children, or other obstructions. If you are unsure have a friend guide you or walk to the rear of the van yourself to be sure the area is clear. (Reversing damage is not covered under the vans insurance policy)
  
• ALWAYS make sure that you have plenty of overhead clearance. Watch out for restaurant drive-thru's, building overhangs, roof eaves, bridges and tree branches. The most common problem we see is when the driver guesses a height, and is one of the most common causes of truck accidents. DON'T GUESS if you are unsure about overhead clearance, stop, look and check it out. (Overhead damage is not covered under the vans insurance policy)
  
• Most of our trucks run on DIESEL fuel. Please confirm fuel type before refilling.
  
• ALWAYS start driving in first gear. Shift to a lower gear when driving up or down hills.
  
• Give yourself PLENTY of room if you need to pass another vehicle. Remember that a loaded van takes much longer than a car to accelerate and slow down. Heavy winds can also affect your van so be prepared.
  
• When TURNING give early warning with your indicator and stay wide in corners to avoid "sideswiping" another vehicle. Look in both mirrors and remember to look at the "bubble" mirror on your left for any vehicles in your blind spot 

Organizing your move:

• Contact all relevant utility companies to make sure accounts are closed where you are leaving and ready to go where you're moving to. Keep a utility log to check service-transfer dates. If you're moving locally, leave the power and water on at your old address a few extra days so you can go back and clean up after your move.
  
• Make sure that you have good quality boxes for your move. They will protect your precious belongings and be much easier to stack evenly in a truck.
  
• Pack items you know you'll need (sheets, towels, toiletries, tissues and a change of clothes) in your clothes hamper on moving day and you'll know just where to find them at your new place.
  
• Put plastic bags around the hoses of your washing machine and secure them with rubber bands to prevent leakage in transit.
  
• Choose a "packing room" ahead of time and box up a few things each day.
  
• Wrap lamp shades separately with clean, non-printed packing paper. Put two or three in a large box. They'll stay clean and won't get crushed.
  
• Mark each box with its contents and destination room. That way, you and your helpers will know where each box belongs at your new home.
  
• If moving locally, you may want your pets to spend moving day with a friend. Animals can become confused and frightened during a move.
  
• Make sure your load is tied down well. Cut Price can supply you with ropes and blankets as an extra charge. Any spare old blankets you may have will also come in handy to protect your furniture.
  
• Put some of your less valuable clothing inside boxes with crockery and glassware. This will help protect against bumps and knocking. Cut Price has selection of Boxes for purchase.
  
• Stand couches on their end when loading your van. You can put a number of boxes in the space where the cushions usually go. Don't lay fridges flat and leave them off for at least an hour after moving. This helps the refrigerant settle with minimal loss.
  
• The more willing people you have to help the means less stress on your back and your patience. Remember children can hold doors open and help too. Always bend your knees when lifting and gloves are a good idea to protect your hands.
